Bioinformatics in Latin America and SoIBio impact, a tale of spin-off and expansion around genomes and protein structures.

Because of the impact arising from bioinformatics and computational biology, in this article, we present an overview of the history and current state of research in this field in Latin America (LA). It would be difficult to cover without inequality of all the efforts, initiatives and works that have occurred over the past two decades in this large region (which covers >> >> 19 million km2 and 600 million people). Despite the difficulties, we have to search in the field of analytical seek publicity carried out by researchers from 19 countries LA in the last 25 years. In this way, we find that research in bioinformatics in the region should develop twice as close to the average for the world’s scientific production in the field.

We also found some pioneering scientist who initiated and led bioinformatics in the region and the promoter of this new scientific field. Our analysis also reveals that the spin-off started around certain areas in the sciences of biomolecular: the study of the genome (anchored in a new generation of sequencing technologies in, followed by the development of proteomics) and the study of protein structure (supported by a three-dimensional structural technology determination and the progress of their computing).

Finally, we show that the contribution to this effort of the Iberoamerican Society for Bioinformatics, founded in Mexico in 2009, has been significant, because it is the leading forum to join the efforts of many scientists from LA interested in promoting research, training and education in bioinformatics.

CytoSelect LDH Cytotoxicity Assay Kit provides a colorimetric format for measuring and monitoring cell cytotoxicity.  The kit contains sufficient reagents for the evaluation of 960 assays in 96-well plates.  Cells can be plated and then treated with compounds or agents that affect cell viability.  Upon cell death, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), a soluble enzyme found in the cytoplasm, is released into the growth media.  The growth media is then transferred to another plate and the released LDH is then detected with cytotoxicity reagent.  In the presence of lactate substrate (included in the LDH Cytotoxicity Reagent) LDH converts lactate to pyruvate and generates nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH).   The WST-1 molecule, also present in the LDH Cytotoxicity Reagent, is converted from WST-1 to the orange formazan form.  An increase in cell cytotoxicity is accompanied by increased LDH release and increased colorimetric signal.  The assay principles are basic and can be applied to most eukaryotic cell lines, including adherent and non-adherent cells and certain tissues, depending on LDH expression levels.  The LDH Cytotoxicity Reagent can be used to detect cytotoxicity in bacteria, yeast, fungi, protozoa as well as cultured mammalian and piscine cells.
